| The village of Leasgill is near Milnthorpe. The main road through the village goes to Kendal. Leasgill was once part of the Eversley Estate, owned by the Argles family. |

| The name, Athenaeum was provided by the Argles Estate, which bequeathed the building to the community. The Argles were a wealthy shipping family based in Liverpool. Mr. Argles was a member of the Athenaeum in Liverpool ad brought this title to what became the Athenaum at Leasgill, initially as a library. |
